Brandon Roy's Comeback Options by Lauren Beasley
The once Portland Trailblazer, Brandon Roy was once one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Unfortunately he made the decision to retire before the 2011-212 season due to multiple injuries and the worry that cycle would never end.
However rumors have circulated that he is contemplating making a comeback to the NBA and hopes to be picked up in free agency in play in the NBA in 2012-2013 season.
Now of course this causes a lot of speculation and excitement about where he could end up and what teams would be good for him. Well I am here to give you my opinion on what teams would be a good fit for him.
First off, we all know that Roy has had plenty of issues and while he has a year to rest his body and get everything back in order. So I anticipate that he still will want to take it easy and not cause another injury but still do his part to be a contributor.
That being said, I think the best fit for Brandon Roy would be championship contender teams, this allows him to compete for a championship, he doesn’t have to worry about being the star but still will have a key role on the team.
The championship contender teams that personally come to mind for me would be Miamia Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks.
Roy could have a nice role on the Miami Heat coming off the bench and being back up to Dwayne Wade. He would have a key scoring leadership role with the second unit and he would have the chance to contend for a championship. He also would have a key role as a potential starter since we all know Wade has a tendency to not stay healthy. He would fewer minutes so he is not worried about wearing himself out but still has a good key role.
Los Angeles Lakers would also be another choice. Lakers are looking to change up the bench and Roy would be a great addition. Once again he could come off the bench unless Mike Brown decided to go with 3 guard lineup with Session, Kobe and Roy. However I still think they would bring him off the bench, plus it would serve him well to once again be a key leader and contributor to the second unit.
Chicago Bulls would be smart to try to go pick up Roy. Bulls have been looking for another consistent scorer to help out Derrick Rose. Bulls are looking to possibly trade Hamilton but even if they were to keep Hamilton, it would be smart to start Brandon Roy and allow Rip Hamilton to come off the bench or vice versa. Either way it works out for Roy and the Bulls.
Oklahoma City Thunder seems to need one more key piece to really go all the way and win a championship. Roy could be that key piece. Once again the great thing about Roy is that Thunder have the option to start Brandon Roy and put Sefolosha on the bench or they could put Roy on the bench and have Roy and Harden be the dynamic duo off the bench. That could really be a lethal combination anyway you look at it.
San Antonio Spurs are more than likely going to win the NBA Championship this season. However I still think the Spurs would be smart to try to go get Roy. First off, Danny Green is really not cutting it for the Spurs at the shooting guard position. So the Spurs could pick up Roy and start him over Green and he also would be a good mentor for Green. Of course they could also bring him off the bench with Ginobli as well, which is another lethal combination.
Los Angeles Clippers is another team with a shot at Roy. Now on the Clippers I anticipate Roy would have more of starter role because Nick Young and Randy Foye have proven to be inconsistent. So Roy would probably play more minutes with the Clippers and I am worried that he would struggle with their up and down pace. However it still could be a good fit. Chris Paul, Brandon Roy and Blake Griffin, that would be a nice combination.
Lastly I would think the Dallas Mavericks would also still be a contender. Dirk Nowitzki has made it clear he wants more stars around him on Dallas. They are in the process of trying to acquire hometown kid Deron Williams, so it would be smart for Dallas to also go for Brandon Roy as well if they can afford it. They would be a lethal big three, if Mark Cuban can help pull that off. Dallas could still Roy off the bench if they like but I anticipate they would still like to probably have him start.
Once again these are the teams I think Brandon Roy would do well on and would have a chance to compete immediately for a championship.
However just in case Roy is looking to go to a young team who is under the radar, the teams that stand out would be the Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Hornets or even his old team the Portland Trailblazers. So Roy has a couple of under the radar team options as well but I just feel he wants to be on championship contender where his role is not stressful.
I hope Brandon Roy is making a comeback, I have always loved his game, I missed him a lot this season and I would love to see him make a comeback and get his chance to win a championship.
